the Cosmic Love cast

As an astrologer and astrology-nerd, I was psyched to hear that my favorite subject would be used to help couples find their “perfect match” on Amazon’s new reality dating show ‘Cosmic Love’. Compatibility in astrology is well-known among astrologers and across pop culture. On dates, it’s common for couples to share what their signs are, hoping that the other won’t wrinkle their nose when they hear “I’m a Pisces.” (I’m kidding Pisces, you guys are great). But knowing how watered-down astrology can get across social media, I had a few doubts when I first started the show. Honestly, I was half-expecting the creators to keep it sun-sign only. But I was pleasantly surprised by how they went about it:

The spoiler-free breakdown

The premise of the show is pretty simple. It follows four leads who get matched up with one other single in the house, using astrological compatibility. The leads then meet the rest of the singles in the house, some of whom are revealed to be their second and third astrological matches. Each week, the leads are supposed to narrow down their prospects by eliminating a single until only one remains–the person who will become their husband or wife. Throughout the show, the persisting question is: should the leads stick with their astrologically “perfect” matches, or follow whatever spark they find in other people? As the leads and non-leads mingle and “astrological matches” are revealed, more and more drama unfolds throughout the season.

The astrology

It goes deeper than sun-sign (phew). The “Astro-Chamber” (kind of wish they had a better name for it) a.k.a. the elusive astrologer who gives the leads astrological insights throughout the show, mentions the sun, rising, moon, north node, and Venus placements of the leads and their matches. Personally, I thought these placements were a good place to start, especially I recognize that many viewers aren’t well-versed in astrology and might need to start with just those five placements.

A few critiques

  1. The non-leads were sort of forced to keep engaging with the leads if they wanted to stay on the show, even if they didn’t feel a spark, which made things slightly inauthentic (the eliminations improved this though).
  2. I thought more house placements would be mentioned, because I personally think these are important. (I think the 7th house might’ve been mentioned though).

3. The challenges could have been spicier (a mud race, really?)

Final thoughts

Aside from those few critiques, I genuinely liked the show. There was enough drama to keep me interested and the leads were likable enough. The astrology seemed accurate and detailed and didn’t just skim the surface. The fact that the singles were expected to marry their final match at the end made everything a lot more intense. Everyone was hot. For anyone who is curious about astrology, it’s a fun watch. And even if you’re not, but still enjoy a good juicy reality dating show, give it a shot.
